14 RENAISSANCE FAIRES & MEDIEVAL MARKETS WORTH ADDING TO YOUR CALENDAR

Renaissance faires and medieval markets have been growing in scale and ambition for decades, and the internet is full of passionate communities documenting every event worth attending. We have not been to all of these ourselves, but based on size, reputation, and what the wider community says about them, these fourteen events - spanning across Europe and the United States - stand out as worth knowing about.

Who Are they For, and When Do They Happen?

Renaissance Faires and Medieval Markets are for everyone: adults, children, LARPers, cosplayers, history buffs, fantasy fans, and anyone who just wants a turkey leg and a front-row seat at the joust.

In the US, the season runs from spring to late autumn and peaks between September and November. In Europe, Medieval Markets mostly happen in summer, often inside real medieval towns. Below we list dates, locations and what to expect at each event, so you can plan around your costume, your budget and your schedule.

Renaissance faires in the United States

Southern Indiana Renaissance Faire

Seymour, Indiana
2026: April 25th – May 24th.
2027: TBA

Full-contact jousting, 100+ vendors and five themed weekends are the draw, but the purpose is just as notable: this is a non-profit educational initiative, and proceeds fund scholarships for high-school seniors heading into arts, entertainment, history or music. The faire began at Birdsell Castle in Charlestown before moving to its current farm site in 2024.

Kentucky Highland Renaissance Festival

Eminence, Kentucky
2026: on weekends between May 30th and July 19th.
2027: TBA

Set in Briarwood, a fictional early 14th-century Scottish village, this high-energy festival is Kentucky's first permanent renaissance festival. The Celtic Dance Troupe, a Human Chess game and fire jugglers are fixtures across themed weekends, and it has a reputation as one of the friendlier, more accessible faires in the region. The HooDoo Pub and The Twisted Thistle are good places to catch your breath.

Bristol Renaissance Faire

Kenosha, Wisconsin
2026: July 11th – September 7th.
2027: TBA

One of the most popular faires in the Midwest, Bristol fills a 30-acre site with jousters, musicians, artisans and actors, set on the day in 1574 when Queen Elizabeth visited Bristol, England. Guests are actively encouraged to come in costume, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming to first-timers and veterans alike.

Pennsylvania Renaissance festival

Manheim, Pennsylvania
2026: August 15th – October 25th.
2027: TBA

Held at Mount Hope Estate and Winery and running for more than four decades, the faire welcomes around 200,000 guests. Every weekend has a different theme, from Viking weekend (Sep 5–6) to Celtic dancing, so no two visits are quite the same. A working blacksmith, glassblowing and a deep dive into the history of archery round out the experience.

Michigan Renaissance Festival

Holly, Michigan
2026: August 22nd – October 4th.
2027: TBA

Set on wooded land in the fictional Hollygrove Village, the festival expects over 250,000 guests a season. More than a dozen stages run constant entertainment, including jugglers, musicians, magicians, hawk walks and whiskey tastings. New in 2026 were a Viking-inspired mead hall, a Wizard Wand Workshop and a 5K run through the village. The Feast of Fantasy dinner is worth booking well ahead.

Ohio Renaissance Festival

Waynesville, Ohio
2026: September 5th – Nov 1st.

Running since 1990 on a 30-acre 16th-century village, the festival was voted the country's best renaissance fair in USA Today's 2026 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards. Fire dancers, acrobats, sword swallowers and troubadours are the mainstays, alongside a five-course Royal Feast and a guided Pub Crawl that has become something of a legend among regulars.

Carolina Renaissance Festival

Huntersville, North Carolina
2026: October 3rd – November 22nd.
2027: TBA

One of the largest faires in the Southeast, set in the Village of Fairhaven. Over 500 costumed characters, 16 stages, falconry, jousting and more than 140 vendors make it one of the most densely packed events on the calendar, and it runs rain or shine.

Medieval Festivals & Markets in Europe

Medieval Fantasy Spectaculum (MPS)

Multiple locations, Germany
2026: April 25th – September 27th (Bad Säckingen, Rastede, Bückeburg, Weil am Rhein, Speyer, Luhmühlen, Borken).
2027: April 25th - September 26th (Bad Säckingen, Rastede, Gut Emkendorf, Bückeburg, Weil am Rhein, Speyer, Luhmühlen, Borken).

Spectaculum (Mittelalterlich Phantasie Spectaculum) is one of the most accessible medieval events in Europe, leaning into high fantasy as much as history, which makes it a natural fit if you came to the Middle Ages through Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings. Expect knightly tournaments, camping and a strong market at whichever stop you choose. One change to know about: organizers said 2026 was the last season of the big-band music arena, with smaller line-ups from 2027.

Medieval Festival of Provins

Provins, France
2026: June 13th - June 14th (41st edition).
2027: TBA.

Held in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Provins, this festival leans hard into historical authenticity. Reenactments, minstrels, troubadours, acrobats and artisans fill the streets in what feels more like a living parade than a fairground. Two days makes it ideal for a focused day trip or a weekend built around the visit.

Medieval Days

Tallin, Estonia
2026: July 10th - July 12th (27th edition).
2027: TBA. It usually falls in the first full week of July.

Set in the Old Town of Estonia's capital, Medieval Days brings the whole city into the celebration over a long July weekend. A large medieval market, workshops, theatrical performances, music and dance fill the streets of one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe. It's also notably family-friendly.

Medieval Week

Visby, Gotland, Sweden
2026: August 2nd – August 9th.
2027: August 8th - August 15th.

Held in Visby, a medieval city with ancient walls and ruins still standing, Medieval Week runs with a different theme each year and offers camping, lectures and workshops alongside performances and a large market. The combination of genuine historical architecture and full immersion makes it one of the most atmospheric events in Europe, and as close as you'll get to feeling what a medieval world was like.

England's Medieval Festival

Pippingford Park, East Sussex, England
2026: August 29th – August 31st.
2027: August 28th – August 30th.

For spectacle at full volume, the festival delivers jousting, falconry and full knights' battles, plus medieval banquets and a large range of food and craft vendors. It's unapologetically theatrical and the production values show. Now branded EMF – King's Grove, it moved to Pippingford Park after almost thirty years at Herstmonceux Castle.

A note for LARPers

If you’re a LARPer, you’ll feel right at home at a Faire. Many of the things you love about LARP are here too: sword fights, colorfull characters, and communities devoted to historical looks and settings.

This also makes Faires a great place for inspiration. You can study costumes up close, pick up ideas or purchase gear for your next kit, watch how experienced fighters move, and remind yourself why you fell in love with this world in the first place.
