Capes & Cloaks
Weather-resistance, Comfort, and Style
Cloaks and capes have lasted centuries for a reason. They work. They keep warm, repel rain and wind, and top you off as a costume few pieces can. Every one at Epic Armoury is designed to work whether you're fighting cold, fighting your way through a festival crowd, or sitting beside the fire after a hard day at peace.
Our cloaks are made to wear. The hoods roll up tidily, the stuff drapes round you without restriction, and the fastenings are secure and easy to handle. Wear them all day and stay comfortable. Try a decent cloak and you'll wonder how you ever managed without.
What are Cloaks and Capes?
A cloak is a loose, long outer robe that drapes over the shoulders and typically has a hood. It features a front fastening and offers protection to the knee or lower leg. A cape is its lighter version, shorter, sleeveless, and constructed for more movement.
Both historically were worn for functional reasons: warmth, protection from the weather, and convenience. They were worn because they worked for all seasons and over almost any article of clothing. Contemporary cloaks and capes today are the same in use, but with better materials and longevity. They warm you up outside without giving up that timelessness, cinematic look.
Why Cloaks Are Worth Having
A cloak is one of those things that simply gets everything just right and doesn't call attention to itself. It's quick to put on, easy to layer, and wind, rain, and cold-resistant. It also gives you that put-together appearance that makes even plain clothes look purposeful.
What They're So Good At
-
Provide warmth and weather protection year-round.
-
Layer easily over clothing, armor, or costume.
-
Offer freedom of movement when walking, working, or acting.
-
Fold or roll up for transport and storage.
Whether you are on the field at a LARP event, festival, or outdoor party, a cape or cloak keeps you warm while creating an organic sense of presence.
Materials That Perform Well Outside
The materials used in a cloak are the most important factor. At Epic Armoury, we design with material chosen for breathability, durability, and comfort for extended periods of wear.
Wool is an old warm, wind-resistant, and self-repelling. It's the first port of call for cold or wet events. Cotton and canvas are lighter and better for warm or inter-seasonal occasions. Some cloaks combine fibres to give you both longevity and a more pleasant drape, without sacrificing the authentic look without sacrificing functionality.
You'll notice the difference when the weather turns; wool keeps you warm without heat, and cotton lets the air flow freely on hot days. These garments are designed to handle outdoor living, not just photo shoots.
Fastenings, Hoods, and Fit
Cloaks and capes are simple in nature, yet there is ornamentation to be found. The closure is safe and reliable, be it a metal fastener, leather strap, or plain toggle. Good hoods are your head and shoulders protectors, shade or rain guard when necessary.
The slash is wide and flowing, giving you ample room for movement and to layer over what you already have. Double-stitched and reinforced hems ensure that they will withstand years of wear, and drape has been tested in the field to drop naturally, irrespective of your build or stature.
Choosing Between a Cloak and a Cape
The better choice depends on what you need from your outerwear.
Use a Cloak If You Want
-
Full rain or cold weather protection.
-
A warm wrap that envelops your body.
-
Something that completes your set with a flowing, timeless silhouette.
Choose a Cape If You Prefer
-
A lighter, more abbreviated layer with more movement.
-
Shoulder coverage that gives you shine without the heat trap.
-
An option that can be easily shed or tweaked on the go.
Most event-goers has both in the wardrobe, a cloak for cold winter nights and a cape for hotter breezy days.
Care and Maintenance
Both capes and cloaks are simple to clean and made to stand up to lots of wear. Most of them can be hand-washed or washed on a cold cycle, though wool varieties prefer to air out instead of being washed too frequently.
Dry them between uses and lay flat or fold in a cool place. Wool should be refreshed with a soft brush or fabric shaver. Cotton and canvas will clean up with a damp cloth. If your cloak has a treated finish, light reproofing or waxing every now and then will keep it water-resistant.
A bit of time and effort keeps your outerwear ready for the next outing and in the best condition with every use.
