Pauldrons
Pauldrons are one of the most impactful pieces of armor you can add to a LARP kit. A good set of shoulder armor changes the silhouette of a costume immediately, adding bulk, presence, and visual weight where it matters most. Whether you are building a hulking warrior, a disciplined soldier, or a stealthy ranger, the right pauldrons pull the whole look together.
What Are Pauldrons?
Pauldrons are shoulder armor pieces worn over the upper arm and shoulder. In historical armor they protected one of the most exposed areas of the body in combat, and in LARP they serve the same visual purpose: making a character look armored, battle-ready, and convincing. They work well worn alone over a tunic or gambeson, or as part of a larger armor set combined with a breastplate, bracers, and greaves.
Unlike full arm armor, pauldrons allow for a good range of movement while still providing significant visual coverage. That balance of presence and practicality is what makes them such a popular choice for LARP builds.
Pauldrons vs. Shoulder Armor: What Is the Difference?
Pauldrons typically cover the shoulder and extend down over the upper arm, often with layered plates or structured leather. Shoulder armor is a broader term that can refer to smaller, simpler pieces that sit on the shoulder without the same extension down the arm. Both serve the same purpose in a LARP context and the choice between them usually comes down to the character archetype and how much coverage you want.
Our Pauldrons and Shoulder Armor Range
We carry pauldrons and shoulder armor to suit a wide range of character types and aesthetics.
For warrior and fighter builds, the Captain Pauldrons, Marauder Pauldrons, and Shoulder Plates Warrior are solid all-round choices that work across most medieval and fantasy settings. The Shoulder Plates Giant Warrior and Shoulder Plates Dark Drake step things up with a more imposing, distinctive look suited to heavier and darker character builds. The Milanese Pauldrons bring a more refined, historical feel inspired by late medieval plate armor.
For soldiers and mercenaries, the Soldier Shoulders, Shoulder Plate Mercenary, and Nordic Pauldrons offer a grounded, battle-worn aesthetic. The Dreki Pauldrons and Barbarian Pauldrons are a natural fit for Norse and tribal character builds.
For ranger, scout, and nature-based characters, the Ranger Shoulders and Ranger Shoulders Suede are purpose-built, sitting lighter on the body and pairing naturally with leather torso armor and hoods. The Woodsman Shoulder Set and Woodsman Suede Shoulder Armour work along similar lines.
For darker and more fantastical aesthetics, the Shadow Shoulder Set and Shadow Shoulder Set Suede suit villain, assassin, and dark fantasy archetypes well. The Eventide Shoulders and Illumine Shoulder lean into a more ethereal, magical character type. The Palace Guard Pauldrons and Outrider Pauldrons in PU are a good choice for faction-aligned or guard characters.
For those wanting something more distinctive, the Spartan Pauldrons and Splint Shoulders offer looks that sit outside the standard medieval fantasy range, while the Renegade Shoulders and Raider Shoulders suit chaotic, outlaw, and raider character types.
Choosing the Right Pauldrons for Your Kit
Coverage. Some pauldrons extend well down the upper arm and provide significant coverage. Others sit closer to the shoulder and are lighter and less restrictive. Think about how much arm freedom your character needs, particularly if you are playing a combat-active role.
Matching your armor. Pauldrons work best when they are consistent in tone and material with the rest of your kit. Leather pauldrons pair naturally with leather bracers and torso armor. If you are mixing materials, keep the color palette consistent.
Single or double. Some character builds wear a single pauldron on the weapon arm or shield arm for an asymmetric look. It is a legitimate and common LARP aesthetic, particularly for rogue and mercenary archetypes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do pauldrons fit over other armor? Most of our pauldrons are designed to sit over a base layer or light torso armor. Check the individual product pages for sizing and fit notes.
Can I wear pauldrons without a full armor set? Absolutely. Pauldrons over a tunic or gambeson is a complete and convincing look on its own and one of the most common ways to build a lightweight LARP kit.
What is the difference between leather and suede pauldrons? Leather has a harder, more polished finish. Suede is softer and more matte, giving a slightly rougher and more worn aesthetic. Both are durable for LARP use.
Are PU pauldrons as durable as leather? PU is a synthetic alternative that is lighter and easier to care for than real leather. It is a solid choice if budget is a consideration or if you prefer a vegan option.
