Halberds: Leverage and Impact

Break the shield wall and control the battlefield.

The halberd is what happens when you need to crack heavy armor. It’s a brutal, efficient design, a heavy axe blade, a spike, and a hook on a long pole, created to level the playing field between foot soldiers and knights. For centuries, this was the primary tool for breaking a formation. It gave you the leverage to chop through defenses, stop a cavalry charge, or simply hook a rider and drag them to the ground.

At Epic Armoury, we have built our collection to deliver that same feeling of power and utility. Our foam halberds are designed to be the "enforcers" of the line. They are top-heavy and visually imposing, giving you tactical options that lighter weapons just can't match. Whether you are hooking a shield rim to open a breach or delivering a heavy swing, these tools allow you to control the momentum of the fight safely.

The Lineup: Bardiches, Fauchards, and Halberds

While "Halberd" is often used as a blanket term for anything with an axe head on a stick, there are actually distinct historical differences depending on the job. We’ve built our collection to cover these specific tools of the trade, so you can pick the one that matches your fighting style.

  • The Halberd & Poleaxe: The classic multi-tool. You get an axe or hammer head for swinging and a spike for thrusting. In a game, the back-spike or the "beard" of the axe is incredibly useful. You can hook the rim of a shield and pull it open just enough for your teammate to land a hit.

  • The Bardiche: This is for when you want a massive silhouette. It’s essentially a giant, elongated axe blade mounted on a pole. It looks terrifying on the field and fits perfectly with characters inspired by Eastern European history or heavy shock troops.

  • The Billhook & Fauchard: These are the grapplers. Originally adapted from pruning tools, they feature a forward-curving blade designed to hook inward. This makes them exceptional at snagging limbs and trapping enemy weapons. If your game plan is to control the opponent, pulling down shields or disarming people, rather than just dealing damage, this is the tool you want.

Dealing with the Weight

Using a halberd feels completely different from using a staff. Because of that big foam head, the balance point is way higher up the shaft. That means you get incredible leverage when you swing, but you can’t change direction as fast as you can with a lighter weapon.

We build our cores to handle that extra stress. We use a thick, rigid fiberglass rod that runs through the shaft to ensure the weapon doesn't bow under the weight of the head. That stiffness is huge, it gives you the control to stop a heavy swing mid-air, which is the key to playing an aggressive character without actually hurting anyone.

Big Foam, Safe Hits

Because a halberd is designed to chop, the head needs to be forgiving. We build our axe blades and hammer heads from soft, durable closed-cell foam that absorbs the energy of the swing. It might look like a rusted hunk of iron, but it hits soft.

But don't forget the point. Like our spears, these are effective at thrusting too. That’s why every single one includes our signature reinforced tip inside the top spike. Whether you are swinging the axe edge or thrusting with the point, the internal construction keeps the fiberglass core safely contained.

Maintenance for Heavy Gear

Halberds have a lot of surface area, and those complex heads tend to catch on everything, branches, shield rims, and armor buckles. That constant friction can wear down the latex faster than on a smooth staff. To keep your gear looking deadly, we recommend wiping it down after the battle and applying a layer of Protection Gel. It keeps the large foam surfaces smooth and prevents the coating from cracking at the stress points.

Bring the Hammer Down

Whether you need a massive Bardiche for the shock value or a tactical Billhook to dismantle defenses, this is where you find the heavy gear.
