Staffs: The Traveler’s Weapon

The staff is the definition of "hidden in plain sight." For centuries, it was the one weapon you could carry anywhere without raising an eyebrow. It starts as a walking aid for the long road, but in trained hands, it becomes a devastating defensive tool. Historically, it was the weapon of the commoner, the monk, and the wanderer—simple, effective, and capable of blocking a sword strike just as easily as it cracks a helmet.

At Epic Armoury, we’ve built our collection to handle both sides of that coin. Whether you are a fighter looking for a rugged defensive tool or a spellcaster needing a focal point for your rituals, our foam staffs are built to take a beating. They give you the reach and the leverage of a polearm, but with a defensive versatility that you just don't get with a spear. It’s the ultimate traveler’s insurance policy: helpful on the hike, and essential in the fight.

Two Paths: The Fighter and The Caster

While the mechanics of the weapon are similar—it’s a long two-handed tool—the look defines the character. We’ve split our designs to cater to the two biggest archetypes in the hobby.

  • The Quarterstaff: This is the working man’s weapon. It’s unpretentious, brutal, and fast. Our designs focus on realism—think heavy wood grains, iron bands, and simple, sturdy shapes. A good quarterstaff isn't about looking flashy; it’s about balance. It allows for a rotational fighting style where you can strike with both ends and block with the center. It’s perfect for the monk or the ranger who values speed and utility over ornamentation.

  • The Wizard Staff: For the arcane casters, the staff is the centerpiece of the entire kit. It’s a symbol of status and power. Our designs here are far more ornate, featuring twisted wood textures, sculpted crystals, and mystical runes. While we can’t sell you actual magic (sorry, no fireballs included), these are perfect for the portrayal of a magical staff. They provide the "hero prop" visual you need when you are chanting a ritual or slamming the butt of the staff into the ground to intimidate a rival. It’s the quintessential mage’s staff—impressive to look at, but still built tough enough to defend yourself if the spell fails.

Built to Block

Fighting with a staff is hard on the weapon. Unlike a sword where you parry with the edge, or a spear where you keep distance, with a staff you are often blocking a heavy strike right in the center of the shaft. That puts a massive amount of stress on the construction.

If the core is cheap, the staff will bow or even snap when it catches a greataxe swing. That’s why we use a heavy-duty fiberglass core that runs the full length of the weapon. It is engineered to be stiff enough to take a solid hit without "wobbling" in your hands, but flexible enough to remain safe for your opponent. We wrap that core in thick, durable closed-cell foam and seal it with a latex coating designed to handle the friction of combat. You can trust it to hold the line.

Reach Without the Point

The staff occupies a unique tactical spot. It gives you the reach of a polearm, but it’s often safer for close-quarters chaos. Because it doesn't rely on a thrusting tip, it’s one of the best long weapons to hand to a new player. You can swing it, sweep legs, and control crowds without worrying about accidentally catching someone in the throat with a point. It’s blunt, it’s effective, and it keeps the enemy exactly where you want them: out of arm's reach.

Keep the Wood Looking Good

Because staffs often double as walking sticks in-game, the bottom tip sees a lot of mud, gravel, and pavement. That abrasion can eat away at the latex over time. To keep your gear looking fresh, we recommend wiping it clean after the game and applying a bit of Protection Gel. It keeps the surface smooth and stops the "wood" finish from peeling off after a long weekend of hiking.
