A cuirass is a type of torso armor that covers both the front and back of the chest, typically consisting of two rigid parts: a breastplate in the front and a backplate in the rear. In contrast to more flexible torso coverings such as gambesons or brigandines, a cuirass is made from solid material—historically steel or leather, and in modern LARP gear, also polyurea-coated foam (PUA). It is meant to provide impact protection to the central core of the body and to identify the allegiance, position, or rank of a fighter.

Utilized across ancient times all the way to Renaissance periods, the cuirass was utilized always as a component of battlefield armor—valuable for torso protection without hindering movement.
